I don't know if it scares you, but the thought of hackers taking my money or accessing my personal data scares me.

Here's a few ways to keep yourself safe online:

1. MFA

This means that after you enter your password, you get a text as another authentication method. This means that even if someone has your password, they won't be able to get in without the text code. It goes without saying that you should NEVER EVER share that code. MFA is the BEST way to make sure your email can't be compromised. Make sure you have MFA on all important accounts, like your email and banking.

2. Check haveibnpwned.com to see if your passwords have ever been leaked

This site will tell you if your passwords have been leaked in a data breach. If you find anything there, changed your password on the leaked account and any account with a similar password.

3. Do a Security Checkup

if you're using Gmail, you can do a security checkup. Just Sign into your Google Account. Go to Manage Your Account, then click Security.

  • At the top, if all recommendations are resolved, this page shows a green shield.
  • If this page shows a green shield, your account is secure, but you may also have security tips that share suggestions to make your account more secure.

4. Beware of Phishing

If someone gets your emails then they have all your accounts (think photos, banks etc.) Making sure you only click on legitimate links will keep out the bad guys. If you're unsure if Chase really wants to deposit $15,000 into your account, then go to Chase.com. and check your messages there. Do the same with any suspicious emails. Don't click links! Rather go straight to the website. And as always, if it sounds too good to be true, then it is too good to be true.
