Does shopping in a cheaper store really save you a significant amount of money? I’ve had this question for years. And now I finally have the answer.

I created a shopping list and compared the prices of all the items in Aldi and Giant. I worked hard to find the most similar items to keep this very honest and real. I also always chose the generic brand when that was available. (That’s a money saver right there!)

Now here are the details:

 Aldi Giant
Grape Tomatoes  $1.85 $3.00
Mini Cucumbers  $1.89 $2.99
1lb of Zucchini  $1.29 $1.79
Multicolor peppers  $2.69 $4.99
Large Russet Potatoes  $3.49 $3.69
Onions  $1.69 $1.97
1lb of Salmon  $9.19 $10.99
Almond milk  $2.19 $4.98
Eggs  $1.12 $2.59
Cole slaw  $1.49 $2.79
Mini bagged avocado  $2.39 $3.49
Kosher pickles $1.39 $4.39
Mayo  $3.09 $4.69
BBQ sauce  $2.98 $3.29
Ketchup  $1.75 $4.39
Green leaf lettuce  $1.89 $2.49
Red onions  $1.75 $3.00
Peanuts  $1.89 $4.49
Pita chips  $2.29 $6.14
Canola oil  $3.39 $5.49
Cooking spray  $2.39 $2.89
Olive oil  $4.99 $8.79
12 pack applesauce squeezies $6.29 $ 9.79
Unsweetened applesauce  $3.09 $2.29
Tomato sauce $0.45 $1.09
Tomato paste  $0.75 $0.99
Tuna can $0.85 $1.19

Total for the Aldi trip: $80.58 Total for the Giant trip: $99.92

$99.92 (Giant) - $80.58 (Aldi) = $19.34 saved by shopping in Aldi!

The recommendation isn’t that everyone switch to shopping in Aldi (although that’s not a bad idea.) You may not have one local, or it may just not be your vibe. The recommendation is that you choose a competitively priced store for your weekly shopping. It’s an automatic money saver with low effort.

And as always, be conscious. Make yourself aware of where your money is going.
