Back to the Basics: How to Write a Check
Your parents and grandparents have done this many thousands of times. However, if you were born in the twenty first century it’s very likely that writing a check can pose a challenge to you. No worries – we've got your back with this quick guide on how to write a check like a pro!
To start, make sure you are writing with a non-erasable pen, preferably in black or blue ink. Make sure to write in a clear, legible handwriting.
Step 1: Fill in the Date
Start at the top right corner of the check with the date. It's essential to be accurate – use today's date or the date you want the recipient to cash it.
Step 2: Write the Payee's Name
In the "Pay to the Order of" line, write the name of the person or company you're paying. Double-check the spelling to avoid any confusion.
Step 3: Write the Amount in Numbers
In the little box on the right, write the amount of money you are paying in numbers. Make sure to start at the far left, so no one can sneak in any extra numbers.
Step 4: Write the Amount in Words
This part is important– write the amount in words on the line below the payee's name. If the amount includes cents, use a fraction to indicate that (e.g., 50/100 for 50 cents).
Step 5: Memo Line (Optional)
If you want, you can add a note in the memo line to remind yourself or the recipient about the purpose of the payment. This step is optional but in some cases can be helpful.
Step 6: Sign Your Check
The bottom right corner is reserved for your signature. Let's see your nicest John Hancock! Without it, the check is not valid. So, sign your name accurately as it appears on your bank account.
Step 7: Record the Transaction
It's a very good habit to keep track of your spending. You can do this by recording the check in your checkbook register or using a budgeting app or register.
That's it – you're done! Writing a check might seem a bit old-fashioned😊, but it's a good skill to have. Go out there and conquer the world, one check at a time!
